Dave Bautista, known for his commanding physique in WWE and Hollywood blockbusters like Guardians of the Galaxy, has shed an impressive 75 pounds after gaining weight for his role in Knock at the Cabin. The actor and former wrestler spoke openly about his transformation, revealing a disciplined approach to both diet and exercise.
In an interview with TODAY, Bautista shared that he initially gained the weight by indulging in calorie-heavy comfort foods like pancakes and French fries. “At the time, I was just thinking, ‘I gotta get big,’” he said. But the bulk left him feeling uncomfortable. “Now looking back at it, I probably overdid it.”
To reverse course, Bautista adopted a calorie-restricted diet, limiting his intake to 2,500 calories per day. He also practiced intermittent fasting, a strategy that restricts eating to specific time windows. “I’m just not eating much,” he said. “And I’m not starving or anything.”
Research supports the effectiveness of intermittent fasting for weight loss and muscle maintenance. Sports dietitian Destini Moody notes it can help reduce calorie intake while preserving lean mass—especially when paired with adequate protein consumption.
Bautista’s training routine also played a key role. While filming Dune in Budapest, he brought in a personal trainer, Jason Manly, to focus on jiu-jitsu. “I did nothing but grapple, like for hours,” he said during an appearance on LIVE with Kelly and Mark. That intense training helped jumpstart his weight loss, and he’s stuck with the practice ever since, traveling with trainers on set.
Experts say that martial arts like jiu-jitsu offer full-body benefits. “They burn calories, boost heart health, improve flexibility, and are enjoyable enough to support long-term consistency,” said Amanda Grimm, a certified personal trainer and running coach.
Bautista’s diet also supports his goals. He follows a plant-forward eating plan with meals focused on nutrient-dense foods like rice, beans, eggs, and fish. Eventually, he hopes to go fully vegan. “Everything else is kind of typical healthy foods,” he told Men’s Health in a fridge tour.
High-fiber, high-protein meals promote fullness and reduce overeating, according to Moody. Bautista avoids dairy due to an allergy and steers clear of fatty meats, which can hinder recovery and performance by promoting inflammation.
For snacks, he opts for simple, energizing choices like almond butter with banana—a combo rich in healthy fats, fiber, and clean carbohydrates.
Bautista’s transformation is a testament to disciplined habits and a sustainable approach to weight loss. Through mindful eating and consistent training, he has reshaped both his body and outlook—proving that balance and persistence are key, even for superheroes.
