Jeff John Hazell, a dedicated fitness trainer from Teesside, has retired after inspiring hundreds through over 6,000 military-style boot camps across his 14-year career. At 69, Jeff closed the chapter on his work with PhysicalFX, the outdoor fitness company he founded in 2014. Over the years, his sessions at Tees Barrage and Hemlington have contributed significantly to the health and wellbeing of countless participants.
A former serviceman, Jeff’s military career began when he joined the British Army at 17, driven by a passion to serve that started at age 14. After training and serving in Germany, he excelled in the All Arms Commando Course and was part of the 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery until 1987. The following year, he joined the Army Physical Training Corps as a Sergeant, specializing in rehabilitation for injured soldiers—a role he found deeply rewarding. He retired from the military in 2000 and continued as a Physical Training Instructor at various military bases across England.
In 2014, Jeff launched PhysicalFX, focusing on outdoor boot camps designed to promote fitness and wellbeing in the community. Reflecting on his career, Jeff said he feels humbled by the positive impact he has made. He emphasized his desire to help others improve their health, mental wellness, and social connections. Despite not seeking much attention, Jeff values the appreciation from those he has helped.
Now retired, Jeff plans to spend more time with his wife Lee, whom he has been married to for 30 years, and their two sons, Harry, 25, and Ollie, 15. The family has lived in Marine Point, Hartlepool, since 2010.
Jeff’s legacy is marked by dedication to fitness, community health, and a lifetime of service both in and out of uniform.
