After three years of planning, the Community Fitness Park at Kiwanis Park officially opened on May 28.
Amber Stratton, president of the Williams Lake Rotary Club, expressed pride in the new facility and encouraged people to use it. She credited several partners for their help, including the City of Williams Lake, Cariboo Regional District, Northern Development Initiative Fund, and BC Alliance for Healthy Living.
The idea for the fitness park was first introduced by past Rotarian Walt Cobb, who initially envisioned it for seniors. As the project progressed, the team realized it would benefit everyone in the community. Although the park’s construction took only a few weeks, raising the \$90,000 needed required significant effort.
Fitness instructors from the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Centre joined the opening celebration, offering free workout tips to help users get the most out of the new equipment.
Instructor April Spurn highlighted the park’s accessibility and user-friendliness. She explained that users can scan QR codes on each piece of equipment to access instructional videos. The park also includes equipment designed for wheelchair users, allowing them to exercise while seated.
Spurn emphasized the park’s flexibility, noting that exercises can be done with low or higher impact depending on the user’s ability and preference.
She added that the fitness park is a great community asset, encouraging people to get active. It is especially useful for parents, who can exercise while watching their children play nearby.
