Zuellig Pharma Launches Lilly Obesity And Diabetes Drug In Thailand

by Daisy

BANGKOK, Thailand — Zuellig Pharma, a leading healthcare company in Asia, announced it will launch Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) in Thailand by the end of May 2025. The medicine, developed by Eli Lilly and Company, is designed to treat obesity and type 2 diabetes. Zuellig Pharma received marketing and distribution rights for Mounjaro® in Thailand earlier this year.

Mounjaro® is a prescription medicine taken once a week. It is used to treat adults with type 2 diabetes who have not achieved adequate control through diet and exercise alone. It can be used alone if metformin is not suitable, or alongside other diabetes medicines. Mounjaro® is also approved to help adults with obesity or overweight conditions lose weight and maintain it. This includes people with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with related health issues like high blood pressure or cardiovascular disease.

The medicine is available as a prefilled pen called the Mounjaro® KwikPen®. It comes in doses of 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg, and 10 mg. This allows doctors to tailor treatment plans to individual patients.

Obesity is a major health issue in Thailand, affecting nearly 48% of the population. The Ministry of Public Health classifies it as a non-communicable disease because it is linked to many chronic illnesses, especially type 2 diabetes. In 2024, Thailand’s Department of Disease Control reported that 6.5 million people, or one in ten, have type 2 diabetes. This condition can cause serious complications including heart disease, kidney failure, eye problems, and foot ulcers that may lead to amputation.

Rehan Saghir, Executive Vice President of Zuellig Pharma’s Commercialization division, said, “Obesity and diabetes are serious health challenges in Thailand. We are excited to bring Mounjaro® to patients here. With our strong knowledge of local regulations and experience in delivering new healthcare solutions, we aim to improve access to this important medicine. This launch is a major step forward in supporting people with chronic metabolic diseases.”
