Health officials and the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) warned against buying weight loss medicines from private clinics or online. They said unregulated products may be fake or unsafe and pose serious health risks.

Laura Angus, Chief Pharmacy Officer at NHS Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board, said many “skinny jabs” sold outside legitimate channels may not contain what the label claims. She urged people to talk to healthcare professionals and only get weight loss medicines through licensed pharmacies with a prescription.

Angus advised people to verify pharmacies through the General Pharmaceutical Council’s regulation website to ensure legitimacy.

North Yorkshire Council’s health lead, Councillor Michael Harrison, encouraged people to use safe, NHS-supported ways to lose weight and improve health. He mentioned free tools on the NHS Better Health website and local programs like Active North Yorkshire’s ‘Healthy You.’

Andy Morling, MHRA’s Deputy Director of Criminal Enforcement, emphasized that weight loss medicines are strong drugs that need professional supervision. He warned that illegal suppliers sell fake or unlicensed products that don’t meet safety standards, putting users at risk.

People experiencing adverse reactions to weight loss injections are advised to seek medical help and report issues through the MHRA’s Yellow Card scheme.
