Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has not confirmed whether Erling Haaland will be available for Sunday’s match against Liverpool.
The Norwegian striker was absent from the squad for Manchester City’s UEFA Champions League clash with Real Madrid on Wednesday, despite traveling to Spain with the team. Haaland had seemed fit when he trained with his teammates at the City Football Academy on Tuesday, raising hopes that he had avoided injury after limping off during last Saturday’s 4-0 win over Newcastle United.
The 23-year-old had suffered a knee issue while assisting James McAtee’s fourth goal in the Newcastle game. Though Haaland initially continued playing, he later collapsed to the ground and required medical attention.
Guardiola explained after City’s 3-1 loss to Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu that Haaland had reported discomfort to the medical team on matchday, particularly when walking up stairs.
During his pre-match press conference on Friday, Guardiola said there were no updates on Haaland’s condition before the weekend. “I don’t know yet. Tomorrow we’ll know more,” he told reporters at the City Football Academy.
He added, “Maybe (I’m hopeful), but I don’t know for sure. We don’t train today, and he will be tested tomorrow.”
