A group of 30 wellbeing and fitness professionals from the community leisure trust recently participated in a training session focused on GLP-1 medications, designed specifically for sport and physical activity experts. The training, delivered by celebrity TV doctor Dr. Hussain Al-Zubaidi, was organized by Future Fit and aimed to provide participants with an understanding of the science behind GLP-1 medications, their role in weight management, and practical applications for fitness professionals.
The session was hosted at University Campus Oldham, which generously donated its facilities for the event. Dr. Al-Zubaidi, who is frequently seen on ITV’s *This Morning*, collaborated with Future Fit to create the course, which is particularly timely as the NHS prepares to expand access to GLP-1 medications for weight management. These medications, which are already used to treat type 2 diabetes, are expected to become more widely available through GP prescriptions to assist in managing obesity.
At present, GLP-1 weight loss injections are available privately through pharmacies, typically at a cost of £150 a month, following a brief consultation. The upcoming NHS changes could make these medications more accessible to those struggling with obesity, but experts caution that GLP-1 drugs should not be seen as a cure-all. Lauren Connis, Head of Health and Wellbeing at Oldham Active, emphasized the importance of providing accurate information to clients, particularly as misinformation about these treatments often circulates on social media.
Connis explained that while GLP-1 medications can support weight loss and help manage diabetes, they do not replace the need for healthy lifestyle changes, such as better eating habits and regular physical activity. “Without appropriate exercise, two-thirds of muscle mass can be lost while using the medication, which may lead to weight gain once treatment stops,” she warned.
The training session received positive feedback from the Oldham Active fitness team, who appreciated the opportunity to deepen their understanding of an emerging area in health and fitness. Melissa Tolan, a Fitness Instructor at Oldham Active’s Chadderton Wellbeing Centre, expressed that the course gave her clearer insights into how GLP-1 medications affect appetite regulation, energy levels, and weight management. She now feels more confident in designing training plans that take into account the impact of the medication on client performance and recovery.
Dr. Al-Zubaidi stressed the growing importance of fitness professionals understanding GLP-1 treatments, as more people turn to medical options for weight loss. He highlighted that fitness experts can play a crucial role in supporting clients before, during, and after treatment, ensuring long-term success and promoting overall health and well-being.
