Members of the Planet Fitness gym in Norwood, Massachusetts, were caught off guard Thursday when the gym unexpectedly closed. A sign posted on the door indicated that the gym was “closed for damage repairs,” but it did not provide any details on when it would reopen.
Eliza Swan, a member of the gym, expressed confusion, saying she had been at the facility the day before and noticed no visible issues. “They said they were doing some kind of repairs or something,” Swan said. “I was here yesterday, I didn’t see anything.”
Later that day, the sign on the door was updated, removing any mention of a health concern and instead referring to damage repairs. This change only added to the members’ confusion. “I thought that was kind of weird because it was last minute,” Swan added.
Other gym members also voiced their frustration. “I feel like they should have given a notice, that would have been really nice of them,” said Owen, another member.
Despite the gym’s closure, workers were seen inside the facility, and several gym-goers showed up, surprised by the unexpected closure. “Usually, there’s someone out here telling us what the problem is if it can’t be opened,” said Marc Maynard, a regular member. “Sometimes, the fire alarm goes off,” he added, recalling previous incidents.
Mark Ryan, another gym member, noted that the facility had been undergoing repairs recently, including fixing a water fountain, and said the men’s locker room was in good condition. “I’m not sure what’s going on now,” Ryan said.
In a statement to NewsCenter 5, Planet Fitness clarified that the closure was due to an area of the gym being inspected for safety. “The health and safety of our members and employees is a priority and, out of an abundance of caution, the local franchise group closed the Norwood location to inspect an area of the club,” the company said.
Hallie Dubuisson, a member, mentioned that she had been at the gym earlier in the week and was told that new supplies were being brought in. “I was here Tuesday, and they did mention they were getting some new supplies,” Dubuisson said.
NewsCenter 5 also spoke with a worker leaving the gym, who said the facility would reopen “when the work is done,” but did not provide further details.
In addition, Planet Fitness stated that members could use nearby locations while repairs were ongoing. “The club is working to reopen to the community as soon as possible,” the company added.
