Boxing icon Floyd Mayweather is preparing for potential legal action against Mayweather Boxing and Fitness, a gym chain that bears his name, amid claims that the business has failed to pay employee wages and is misusing his brand for financial gain.
According to a report from TMZ on May 20, Mayweather’s legal team sent a formal letter to the gym’s management, demanding access to business documents and internal communications. The letter gave the gym until May 25 to comply or face a possible lawsuit. As of now, no legal filing has been made.
In the letter, Mayweather’s team expressed frustration over the continued use of his name, image, and likeness, despite his limited role as a brand ambassador. “Your organizations have continually and improperly exploited his name… while simultaneously embroiling him in lawsuits and negative press,” the statement read. “While Mr. Mayweather has no control over operational or payroll decisions, the public perception increasingly places blame squarely on him.”
Although the deadline for document submission has passed, no lawsuit has yet been filed, and some gym owners involved are speaking out.
In a Business Insider article published on June 2, franchisee Sara McSpedon, who opened two Mayweather gyms in Chicago, said she felt misled by the boxing star. “I don’t know exactly what happened in this business, but what I do know is that Floyd did not do us any favors,” she said. McSpedon claimed to have lost $750,000 from the failed ventures, and she is currently rebranding both locations.
She also alleged that Mayweather had promised to visit one of her gyms for promotional support, a visit that never happened.
Similar claims were made by Derek Love, a former franchisee in Georgia who opened a Mayweather gym in 2022. Love said he was told Mayweather might visit but was later informed the appearance would cost $30,000. “I was shocked and never asked again,” he said. Love estimated his financial losses at around $1 million after closing the gym in 2024.
With both sides trading accusations and no clear resolution in sight, the dispute appears far from over. Legal proceedings may still follow, as tensions continue to rise over the use of Mayweather’s brand and the financial challenges facing the franchisees.
