Trainer Rodolfo Sanchez-Salomon from the Mid-Atlantic region has been suspended for 60 days by the Horseracing Integrity and Welfare Unit, the enforcement branch of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority. The suspension follows the detection of elevated total carbon dioxide (TCO2) levels in his horse Tik Tok Daddy. As a result, Sanchez-Salomon agreed to pay a \$2,500 fine and serve a 30-day suspension. Tik Tok Daddy was disqualified from the race, and the prize money was ordered to be returned.
An additional 30-day suspension was added because Sanchez-Salomon had two previous medication violationsEach violation carried 1.5 penalty points, and the new TCO2 violation added three points, bringing his total to six, which triggered the extra suspension. His suspension will run from May 24 to July 22, 2025.
Sanchez-Salomon began his training career in 2017 and has accumulated 336 wins and more than \$10.8 million in earnings from 2,208 starters. He led the summer standings at Laurel Park in 2022 and ranked in the top 100 for wins and earnings in both 2022 and 2023.
TCO2 naturally occurs in horses through metabolic processes, but its levels can change due to diet, electrolyte balance, and exercise. Exercise increases lactate, which lowers TCO2 and causes muscle fatigue. Manipulating TCO2 aims to raise its levels and reduce lactate, helping horses perform better.
