The gymnasium at Boyle Community Centre in London, already closed for renovations, will remain shut while Ontario’s Ministry of Labour investigates a carbon monoxide leak that hospitalized six workers on Monday morning.
The workers, all employed by Aveiro Constructors Ltd., were taken to hospital as a precaution but were released within a few hours and have since returned home, said Victor Aveiro of Aveiro Constructors Ltd.
Emergency crews were called to the site just before 10:30 a.m. after dangerously high carbon monoxide levels were detected during floor renovations at the Charlotte Street centre in Old East Village. The levels peaked at 835 parts per million.
A city spokesperson said the suspected source was equipment used by contractors to strip the gym floor. A propane-powered floor stripper and a propane tank were seen outside the building shortly after fire crews arrived.
Seven people were assessed at the scene, and six were taken to hospital as a precaution.
Jon-Paul McGonigle, the city’s director of recreation and sport, thanked emergency personnel for their quick response and confirmed that the gym will remain closed until the Ministry of Labour completes its investigation.
He added that the original renovation timeline, expected to take several weeks, may change depending on the outcome of the investigation.
The London fire department ventilated the gym after the evacuation. Officials also reminded residents to install working carbon monoxide alarms outside all sleeping areas in homes with fuel-burning appliances, fireplaces, or attached garages.
