BowFlex is recalling nearly 3.8 million adjustable dumbbells after reports that their weight plates can come loose and cause injuries. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has received more than 100 injury reports, including concussions, abrasions, broken toes, and bruises.
These dumbbells are popular because they allow users to adjust weight without needing multiple sets, saving space. The recall covers 3,844,200 units, including 3.7 million sold by Nautilus Inc., which rebranded as BowFlex in 2023.
BowFlex filed for bankruptcy in March 2024. Johnson Health Tech Retail bought some of its assets, including the recalled dumbbells. Johnson Health Tech will offer customers a refund in the form of a voucher or replacement units, but only if purchased through them.
In a statement, Johnson Health Tech Trading said the recall reflects their commitment to providing safe, quality fitness equipment. Customers who bought dumbbells from BowFlex or Nautilus can request a prorated voucher refund and will also get a one-year digital fitness membership. The company is contacting customers directly.
However, Consumer Reports criticized the refund policy, calling it insufficient. Gabe Knight, a senior safety policy analyst, said consumers deserve full refunds without conditions.
The recalled models are the “BowFlex 552, 52.5-lb Adjustable Dumbbells” and the “BowFlex 1090, 90-lb Adjustable Dumbbells.” They come as single units or pairs, with black handles, weight plates, and plastic trays. The 1090 model adjusts from 10 to 90 pounds.
The CPSC advises all owners to stop using the dumbbells immediately and apply for a refund. Claim forms are available online.
