The introduction of weight loss injections like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro has changed how people approach weight management. However, Jane Sigley, a Slimming World Consultant, believes these drugs cannot replace lifestyle changes.
Jane joined Slimming World and reached her target weight after losing nearly two stone. She later became a Consultant, gaining confidence and freedom she had never felt before. To her, lasting weight loss comes from more than quick fixes.
She explains that while some may be tempted by drugs promising fast results, true weight loss and maintenance require real change. “Weight loss drugs need to go hand-in-hand with changes to your diet, activity, and mindset. They’re not a replacement for those changes,” Jane says.
A recent Oxford University study supports this view, showing that people who stop taking weight loss drugs usually regain the weight within a year, and often fully regain it in less than two years unless they maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Slimming World focuses on helping members make lasting changes. Jane says their healthy eating plan encourages eating nutritious everyday foods, allowing members to lose weight without feeling deprived. Their activity program helps people increase movement at their own pace. The group environment offers behavior change support, helping members rethink their relationship with food, exercise, and weight.
With over 55 years of experience, Slimming World believes its approach is the best for adopting lifelong healthy habits. Jane adds that the organization supports members who use weight loss drugs alongside their program.
In the UK, 64 million people live with overweight or obesity. Jane notes that many people join Slimming World after unsuccessful solo attempts. She says support is crucial because losing weight alone is difficult. Whether using medication or surgery, lasting change needs real support. Members often form strong friendships, and the motivation and accountability of group weight loss help people stick to their goals until healthy habits become routine.
Despite more weight loss drugs on the market, a poll of 2,000 adults found 69 percent are unlikely to use them. Among these, 25 percent don’t want to change their eating or social habits, 21 percent worry about proper nutrition, and 20 percent say they love their food too much.
Jane hears similar concerns from new members. Many are surprised to learn they can lose weight without missing out on their favorite foods. A recent survey by OnePoll of Slimming World members found 85 percent were surprised they could lose weight while still enjoying foods they love.
The survey also showed that 89 percent of members enjoy losing weight while getting the nutrients they need. More than three-quarters now prepare healthy, filling meals their whole family enjoys, and 76 percent feel proud to pass healthy habits to their families. Over half reported being surprised by how quickly they lost weight after joining Slimming World.
Jane reflects on her journey, saying she is delighted with her weight loss and the lasting changes she made. She respects those who choose weight loss injections but is glad she took the lifestyle route. “I feel confident I’ve learned how to make changes I can keep forever,” she says. Jane has changed how she thinks about food and understands why past attempts failed. Knowing her triggers helps her stay on track, and she is grateful to Slimming World for that support.
Jane currently leads several Slimming World groups in Tameside and Glossop, including sessions at Audenshaw’s Guide Bridge Theatre on Saturdays and at Hadfield Cricket Club on Tuesdays.
