Comedian Jim Gaffigan joked about not taking full credit for his 50-pound weight loss, saying, “I was brave enough to stick a needle in my stomach.”
On May 26 during a Today show interview, the 58-year-old explained he used medication to help shed the weight. Gaffigan lost 50 pounds with the aid of Mounjaro, a prescription drug for type 2 diabetes that also supports weight loss through injections.
“I did appetite suppressants, so it’s not like I can take all the credit,” he said while promoting his comedy special The Skinny.
Before starting the treatment, Gaffigan weighed 270 pounds. He noted the health benefits, saying his knees hurt less and he feels less tired. “I love it because I feel better,” he added.
Gaffigan admitted he was unsure the medication would work, recalling a friend’s experience of nausea after trying it. “I thought my true joy of eating would overpower anything,” he said.
He also addressed the stigma around discussing weight-loss medication. “I almost thought it was kind of odd that people were resistant to talking about it. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it,” he said, adding that people use different methods to feel better, just like using hair dye.
The comedian’s candid remarks highlight the challenges and benefits of using medication to manage weight and health.
