Chinese Researchers Make Major Progress in Weight Loss Drug

by Daisy

Chinese scientists have made significant advances in obesity treatment with Mazdutide, a domestically developed weight-loss drug that shows strong effects on reducing body weight and improving metabolic health.

The Phase III clinical trial results of Mazdutide were recently published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine. The findings reveal that the drug not only leads to notable weight loss but also helps lower waist circumference, blood pressure, blood lipids, and uric acid levels. Ji Linong, the lead researcher and director of the Department of Endocrinology at Peking University People’s Hospital, highlighted these additional health benefits.

In China, the number of overweight and obese individuals has grown rapidly over the past 40 years. This increase raises the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and premature death.

To address this urgent health issue, pharmaceutical companies both in China and abroad are accelerating the development of new weight-loss medications.

China’s national health authority released guidelines in 2024 recommending medication as one part of obesity treatment. Currently, five weight-loss drugs are approved in China, including Semaglutide and Orlistat, which are available on the market.

Experts stress that medication alone is not enough to fight obesity. It should be combined with lifestyle changes for the best results.

Public awareness of health is rising in China. Since 2008, the country has celebrated National Fitness Day on August 8 to encourage active living. The fitness and light food industries have also seen rapid growth.

A nationwide campaign against obesity is ongoing. Hospitals across China are opening weight management clinics. The national nutrition authority has issued healthy eating guidelines. Many primary and secondary schools now require students to participate in daily physical education classes.

While weight-loss drugs like Mazdutide show promise, experts emphasize the importance of combining medical treatments with healthy diet and exercise to achieve lasting success.
