The administration announced on Tuesday that $220,600 will be distributed through the School Nutrition Equipment Assistance for Schools grant program. School districts can use this funding to purchase kitchen appliances such as refrigerators and freezers, enabling them to offer students a wider variety of options that support a healthy diet. The grant can also help schools acquire specialized cooking equipment like steamers, which contribute to preparing meals that align with a fitness diet, promoting overall student health and wellness.
Governor Maura Healey highlighted the state’s strong commitment to supporting nutritious school meals. She said, “Providing young people with healthy meals is essential. This funding will help schools enhance the quality, safety, and appeal of the breakfasts and lunches they serve, encouraging healthier eating habits.”
Massachusetts recently became the eighth state to make universal free school meals permanent, following Governor Healey’s signing of the Fiscal Year 2024 budget, demonstrating her dedication to student wellbeing.
Dr. Patrick Tutwiler, Secretary of Education, stressed the importance of food security for learning success. “Students cannot focus in class if they are hungry,” he said. “It’s not just about access to food; we want to ensure meals support a healthy diet and fitness diet that sustain students’ health now and into the future. This grant will help schools create environments where students can focus on learning rather than worrying about their next meal.”
