At 40, Michelle Kloese felt her body was unrecognizable. Over five years, she gained 38 pounds and developed high cholesterol, high blood sugar, and plantar fasciitis, a painful foot condition.
In her 20s, Michelle loved running and regularly ran 5K races. But her body began changing in her mid-20s when she showed signs of early menopause, including infertility. By her 30s, tests confirmed she had been in perimenopause about 15 years earlier than usual.
In her mid-30s, Michelle took a demanding job as a middle school assistant principal. The long hours left little time for exercise. Her busy schedule and irregular meals led her to snack more. “Someone would leave a cupcake on my desk, so I’d eat that, or parents would bring in candy,” Michelle said.
The change in her body became clear after a surprise trip to Ireland for her 40th birthday. Seeing the photos, she realized she needed to make a change.
Starting a less stressful job in education technology, Michelle discovered a health app called Personify Health offered through her insurance. She signed up and began tracking her steps and water intake.
Michelle lost 38 pounds in the first year and 23 more in the next. Now, she focuses on maintaining her weight within a few pounds.
“I have so much more energy — I’m not as sluggish or tired all the time,” she said. Her high cholesterol and high blood pressure also improved. “I just feel a whole lot better,” Michelle added.
She credits three key habits for her success and continues to practice them to keep the weight off.
