Lil Rel Howery Opens Up on Role Behind Weight Loss

by Daisy

Lil Rel Howery recently opened up about his weight-loss journey, revealing that it was inspired by his mental health and faith rather than quick fixes like Ozempic. During an interview on TODAY, the actor reflected on his breakout role in the 2017 film *Get Out*, saying that despite the success, he felt deep sadness. “Even though I’m performing and doing what I’m doing, I just felt like I had to do things better,” Howery said.

He admitted that at the height of his career, “I was probably at my saddest.” This realization pushed him to seek therapy and start exercising, leading to a transformation that also strengthened his faith. “I’m the happiest I’ve ever been. I feel so good about myself,” he shared.

In a January interview with *Men’s Health*, Howery dismissed rumors about using Ozempic to lose weight. “That’s not what I did,” he said. Instead, he focused on hard work over five years—physically, mentally, spiritually, professionally, and personally.

His journey began in 2017 when he noticed weight gain. Howery started riding a Peloton bike while listening to gospel music, which helped him “let things go.” This also led to deeper spiritual conversations and a stronger faith.

He then increased his workouts, adding weightlifting and boxing. Alongside physical changes, he sought therapy to address mental health and unresolved grief over his mother’s passing. “It just tied everything together,” Howery explained.

Giving up alcohol marked a turning point. “As soon as I stopped drinking, I saw that six-pack start to show up,” he said. He admitted that for years he blamed his age for weight struggles, but it was actually the alcohol.

On his 45th birthday, Howery reflected on his progress in an Instagram post, saying, “At 45 I feel like I’m at the best I’ve ever been spiritually, mentally, and physically… God is so good.”

Last summer, he firmly denied using Ozempic in an Instagram video, saying, “That’s not my journey.” He credits God for inspiring his focus on health. “I was in a dark space, but I said yes to God,” he said.

Howery emphasized that his journey has been a marathon, not a sprint. “This journey wasn’t easy. I really work my butt off. I ain’t taking any supplements… I don’t do any of that. This has just been a spiritual journey. It’s been a mental journey. It’s been a journey full of love.”
