HANKINSON ND — The Hankinson community is left searching for a new place to exercise after a fire damaged the local health club and other businesses in the same building.
Jeremy Heins, owner of Hankinson Health Club, called the gym a home for many in the town. He was not at the club when the fire started but rushed back after hearing the emergency news. “I was here an hour before. When I got the call about the fire, I flew back as fast as I could,” Heins said.
Eric Fenske, manager at the nearby Edj Bar and Grill, saw smoke from the fire while on his way home. “I saw smoke coming from the chimney,” Fenske recalled.
The inside of the building is badly damaged, and many gym members are unsure where they will work out next. For some, Hankinson Health Club was their only nearby gym. Member Sarah Kluge said she doesn’t plan to drive far for another gym and hopes the club will reopen soon.
Heins hopes to repair and reopen the gym within a year. He is looking for community support and is exploring options to find a new location or rebuild as soon as possible. “We don’t have all the answers yet, but we are working on finding or building a new space,” he said.
The cause of the fire remains unknown. The Hankinson Fire Department has not responded to requests for comment.
