White Welcomes Timber Challenge While Planning Summer Fitness Campaign

by Daisy

Arsenal defender Ben White has pledged to train daily over the summer as he aims to return to full fitness and reclaim his place in the starting lineup for the upcoming Premier League season.

White, 27, spent a large part of the previous campaign managing a knee injury, which eventually required surgery in November. The recovery kept him out of action for three months. Since his return, Arsenal have carefully monitored his minutes, with White appearing in four of the team’s last six league matches.

Much of his playing time has come as cover for Jurrien Timber, who has been gradually reintegrated into the squad after a lengthy recovery from an ACL injury. Timber’s availability for crucial Champions League ties against Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain saw White playing a supporting role. Now, with both players fit, the competition for the right-back spot is set to intensify — something White sees as beneficial for the squad.

“Seeing JT come back from an ACL and play every game so well has been great,” White told The Mirror. “Ideally, I would have helped more and taken some pressure off him. But it’s a good situation — we’re very different types of full-backs, so it gives the team options.”

White reflected on the challenges of his injury, calling it a new and difficult experience. “I’ve never really been injured before, and I didn’t know how to deal with it properly. Not being able to do what I love or help the team was tough. But now I feel good, and I’m focused on getting ready for next season.”

With a baby on the way, White plans to stay in England over the summer and keep training. “It’s such an exciting time — probably the most valuable thing that can happen,” he added.

White also confirmed that he is open to returning to international duty after positive talks with new England manager Thomas Tuchel. He hasn’t featured for the national team since a reported dispute during the 2022 World Cup.

Meanwhile, Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard has urged the team to finish the season strong after their recent dip in form. The Gunners have managed just three wins in their last ten league matches, falling out of the title race and risking a drop from second place.

“Our goal now is clear — if we can’t finish first, we want to finish second,” Ødegaard said in the club’s matchday programme. “We’ve had tough games against Newcastle and haven’t beaten them in a while. We’re determined to change that today. It’s our last home game and we want to end on a high.”

He added, “We didn’t do enough to win the league, but winning these last two games is important. We want to go into the summer with a positive feeling.”
