Multinational companies face rising healthcare costs as employees increasingly expect coverage for weight loss injections, especially in the US.
At the IPMI Summit hosted by Health & Protection, Kelly McCain, director of international expansion at Business Group on Health, discussed the rapid rise in use of GLP-1 inhibitors like Mounjaro and Ozempic for weight loss.
McCain shared that many US-based multinational employers have expressed concern about the high cost of covering these medications.
“In the US, cost is a major issue as budgets are already stretched to the limit,” McCain said. “Some employers project that continuing current coverage levels over the next five years could be financially devastating.”
While the financial pressure is strongest in the US, McCain noted that companies in other countries are also asking questions about their role in providing access to these treatments.
During a follow-up Q\&A, McCain highlighted three key factors driving demand: increased access, employee expectations, and adherence monitoring.
“In the UK and other markets, employees often turn to private healthcare to avoid waiting lists or get prescriptions faster,” she explained. “There’s also growing pressure as employees learn that their colleagues in the US have coverage for these drugs and expect the same benefits.”
She added that employers are also focusing on ensuring that employees follow their treatment plans properly.
Overall, the rising demand for weight loss drugs presents a growing challenge for multinational employers managing healthcare costs and benefits across different markets.
