Albany recently paid tribute to Ron Sontz, a legendary local educator and coach, by dedicating the basketball court at the Albany Jewish Community Center in his name. Sontz, who coached basketball and baseball for many years at Philip Schuyler and Albany High School, is widely respected not only for his accomplishments on the field and court but also for the lasting positive influence he had on his students and athletes.
The decision to honor Sontz came after a generous donation from Irv Paris, a philanthropist and longtime childhood friend of the coach. Paris wanted to ensure that Sontz’s contributions to the community would be permanently remembered, and he insisted that the gym floor bear his friend’s name as a lasting tribute.
In his own words, Sontz said the greatest achievement of his career was not the wins or titles but the meaningful impact he had on the lives of the young people he coached. “I think the thing I’m most proud of,” he said, “is that I had positive impacts on the lives of many students and athletes.” The dedication of the court ensures that his legacy will continue to inspire future generations in Albany’s community.
