Tahira Foods Ltd, based at Stretford Motorway Estate and supplying shops across the North of England and Scotland, was fined £156,000 following three inspections by Trafford Council’s environmental health team. The total penalty reached £172,716.88, which included a £2,000 surcharge and nearly £15,000 in legal costs.
Inspectors discovered serious safety and hygiene breaches at the site. Staff were seen climbing on pallets of boxed food to reach items stored at height after a forklift truck was banned from use due to safety concerns. Large amounts of pre-packed, ready-to-eat meat and cheese were found stored at room temperature because the site had no working refrigeration at the time. The affected products were surrendered, and a withdrawal notice was issued to customers.
A follow-up visit in May revealed further problems. The forklift truck had not undergone the required safety inspection and was being operated by unlicensed staff. On a third visit, staff admitted to climbing on stock because the available ladders were unsafe to use.
The court was told that Tahira Foods Ltd had failed to put in place a proper food safety management system. Ghias El-Yafi, the company director, attended the hearing at Manchester Magistrates’ Court.
Cllr Rose Thompson, Trafford Council’s executive member for communities and safety, said the council’s environmental health officers work hard to protect public health and uphold high standards. She added, “We do not hesitate to take action against companies that fall short of requirements.”
Tahira Foods supplies pre-packed ambient, chilled, and frozen foods to small and medium-sized shops across the North and Scotland. The case underscores the importance of proper food storage and workplace safety, especially for ready-to-eat products. Trafford Council said the prosecution demonstrates its commitment to protecting public health and supporting safe business practices.
