Outspoken chef Gordon Ramsay is known for being tough on food, but when it comes to fast food, he has high praise for In-N-Out’s Double-Double burger, animal style. In an interview with Premiere Collectibles, Ramsay said, “I will literally go to a drive-thru, In-N-Out, and I’ll wind the window down, and I’ll ask for a Double-Double animal style, and they recognize me and they give me lots of extras. So I just stack them, jump in the backseat, and eat them all.”
In-N-Out uses 100% USDA ground chuck, which fits Ramsay’s idea of the perfect burger beef. He has named beef chuck as the key ingredient in a great burger. “I love In-N-Out Burger! Honestly!” Ramsay said enthusiastically. “I just wish they’d open up in bloody England because those drive-thrus are amazing.”
The Double-Double includes two beef patties, American cheese, iceberg lettuce, tomato, onions, and In-N-Out’s creamy burger sauce. Ordering it “animal style” adds pickles, extra sauce, and grilled onions. This style is part of the chain’s unofficial secret menu. Ramsay also told Thrillist in 2022, “No offense to my friend Danny Meyer of Shake Shack, but it’s an In-N-Out burger, all the way. Especially when it’s freshly cooked and served animal style. Nothing better.” Vegetarians can order the grilled cheese sandwich “animal style,” which includes all toppings except the beef patties. Animal style fries are also available.
On the show Mythical Kitchen, Ramsay named an In-N-Out burger as part of his ideal last meal, along with other favorites like a full English breakfast and butter chicken. “These guys are incredible. The fact that everything’s sourced locally, they stay within California. It’s a perfect drive-thru, you don’t get any hassle,” Ramsay said. “I bring the window down, I give them a little \$100 bill as a big thank you, and I pick up my Double-Double. Uh, yeah. Heaven.”
The late celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain also loved In-N-Out. He once called it his favorite restaurant in Los Angeles. “I like mine animal style,” Bourdain told Eater in 2015. “And I’d tell you what that is, but I’d have to kill you.” He joked that a photo of an In-N-Out burger would get more Instagram likes than a picture of himself and other famous friends.
Despite Ramsay’s wishes, In-N-Out has no plans to expand to the UK. The chain celebrated its 75th anniversary and still does not have any locations east of the Mississippi River in the US. Meanwhile, the largest fast food chains in the UK are Costa Express, Greggs, Subway, and McDonald’s — none of which offer animal style burgers.
