A recent survey by The Sun reveals that 73 percent of readers are considering using weight-loss injections to help shed excess pounds.
Official data shows that prescriptions for the three most popular drugs—Ozempic, Mounjaro, and Wegovy—jumped from 1.4 million in 2023-24 to 2.7 million last year.
The sharp rise was mainly driven by Mounjaro, known as the most powerful of the three. Prescriptions for Mounjaro surged from just 3,300 to 1.1 million within a year.
Most of these injections were originally prescribed to people with type 2 diabetes, as the drugs were designed to treat that condition. Only recently have they been approved for weight loss alone.
NHS figures show similar trends in Wales and Scotland, where prescriptions doubled last year. In Wales, numbers rose from about 34,000 to 70,000, while in Scotland, prescriptions increased from 40,000 to 50,000.
Experts expect these figures to climb further this year as the NHS plans to offer the injections through slimming clinics.
Meanwhile, over a million people are already buying the injections privately.
Dr. Leyla Hannbeck from the Independent Pharmacies Association said, “Never in my career have I seen a product with as much hype as these injections.”
