Mark Fettes, a tech expert from Lancashire, has lost over eight stones after a shocking diagnosis forced him to change his eating habits. Once weighing 20 stone, Mark’s health was rapidly declining as he kept getting “bigger and bigger.” His turning point came when doctors diagnosed him with type 2 diabetes.
Along with diabetes, Mark was also battling high blood pressure and was taking medication for it. He admits that unhealthy eating habits had taken hold of his life. “My wife Nikki and I would have takeaways two to four nights a week. Working from home, I developed a habit of secret snacking,” he said.
Mark revealed that he often ordered fast-food breakfasts or, once Nikki left for work, he would sneak out to buy several microwave burgers, a large bag of cheese balls, and a two-liter bottle of cola. He even used his credit card to hide these purchases from his wife.
Although Mark had tried Slimming World before, he never stuck with it. “I’d stop going after three weeks and didn’t really follow the plan,” he explained. “I now realize that by skipping group support, I wasn’t learning about the plan, my relationship with food, or how to change my habits.”
His doctor then suggested a 12-week Slimming World referral program. When Nikki decided to join a group herself, Mark agreed to go along to support her, even though he was skeptical at first.
Since then, Mark has lost more than eight stones and put his diabetes into remission in less than eight months. His story highlights how changing eating habits and seeking support can transform health and wellbeing.
