Scientists have discovered that eating spicy food may help people lose weight because it causes them to eat less. A study involving 130 participants who ate meals with different levels of spiciness found that spicy food slows down eating and reduces portion sizes.
Dr. Paige Cunningham, a food scientist at Penn State University, explained that the “oral burn” from spicy dishes, such as those from Indian cuisine, makes people eat more slowly. This slower eating habit typically leads to consuming fewer calories.
Cunningham added that when people eat spicy food, their energy intake during a meal decreases. If this lower calorie intake continues over time, it could support weight maintenance and help with weight loss.
