Luke Humphries, the world number one darts player, believes his four-stone weight loss played a key role in his recent success. Before shedding the weight, Humphries had struggled to win professional titles and faced an early exit at the World Championship.
Since losing weight, he has won seven Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) titles, including the World Championship crown. Humphries says carrying extra weight made him feel tired and less able to endure long matches, even though darts is not a highly physical sport.
“I was very fatigued when I was overweight. You’re on your feet all the time, and excess weight just tires you out,” he told Men’s Fitness. “Losing weight gave me more energy, helped me exercise more, and cope with longer days better. It was the missing ingredient in my game.”
To lose weight, Humphries cycled for 30 minutes daily and improved his diet to stay focused during matches. He noted rapid progress after starting his journey in January 2021.
“By March, I reached my first major final, then made another a week later, and another six weeks after that,” he said. “Suddenly, I was performing at a higher level and making finals more consistently. It was a slow climb, but I noticed the changes quickly.”
Humphries credits his weight loss as a major factor behind his rise to the top of the darts world.
