A long-standing boxing gym in Wichita’s Planeview neighborhood suffered severe damage early Tuesday when a storm tore off its roof. Villa Boxing Club, a community fixture since the late 1950s, also experienced significant interior damage, leaving the gym exposed to rain and debris.
The storm destroyed the gym’s roof, causing water damage and structural risks. Puddles and debris now cover the training floor, damaging equipment and making it unsafe for classes. As a result, all activities have been suspended, leaving hundreds of children, teens, and adults without their usual fitness and safe space.
Jacob Villa, owner and coach at Villa Boxing Club, said he was alerted early Tuesday morning and rushed to the gym. He noted that while the surrounding neighborhood remained mostly intact, the gym suffered the brunt of the storm. “That’s okay,” Villa said. “We’ll get it figured out, we’ll get it fixed through God’s grace and his mercy. We will overcome this, we’ll get through it.”
Villa emphasized his dedication to serving the community through the gym and said he plans to continue despite the setback.
Villa Boxing Club is widely recognized as Wichita’s longest-running boxing gym and is considered more than just a training center—it is a cornerstone of the community.
