Chattanooga OKs $85K Gym Equipment for Wastewater Staff

by Daisy

Chattanooga City Council unanimously approved spending nearly \$85,000 on workout equipment for the city’s wastewater employees despite concerns over the tight budget. Some council members questioned the large expense, given the financial constraints faced this year.

District 4 Councilman Cody Harvey expressed his reservations, saying he supports fitness but was worried about the cost amid budget pressures.

The wastewater department’s administrator, Mark Heinzer, defended the purchase by emphasizing the importance of employee health. He explained that many workers have 12-hour shifts, either from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. or 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., which limits their access to the downtown fitness facility. After long shifts, employees typically go straight home, making it difficult to maintain regular exercise routines. Heinzer said the new equipment aims to encourage fitness among staff who perform physically demanding jobs.

He also clarified that the workout equipment would be restricted to wastewater employees only. Other city workers would need an escort to access the wastewater plant, which could pose safety issues.
