Tamil actor Sneha, known affectionately as the “smiling queen,” recently spoke about her approach to maintaining a balanced diet and managing her weight. In a conversation with fitness influencer Ramya Subramanian, the 43-year-old actor shared her experiences with different fitness routines. She said she had tried yoga, HIIT, and aerobics, but added that her body no longer responds the same way it used to. Sneha noted that she has been able to manage her weight effectively for almost a year now.
Sneha highlighted that weight training has helped her feel strong. She said she supports this with a clean diet. According to Sneha, she eats all kinds of foods but keeps track of her daily calorie intake through macro counting. She mentioned that she avoids sugar, except for an occasional treat about once a month. She said this helps her, as reducing sugar works well for her weight management. Her diet includes a balance of carbohydrates, minerals, fiber, and protein. She prefers grilled foods, drinks plenty of water, and keeps her meals low in masala and salt.
Experts have pointed out that cutting down on sugar can play a key role in weight loss. Dr. Rajiv Kovil, head of diabetology at Zandra Healthcare, explained that sugar, especially from processed foods and sweetened drinks, provides empty calories. These add to energy intake without offering nutritional value. He said that reducing or eliminating added sugars helps lower overall calorie consumption, making it easier to create the calorie deficit needed to lose weight. Dr. Kovil added that sugar can cause spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels, which may lead to increased fat storage and hunger soon after eating. Removing sugar from drinks like sodas and flavored coffees, as well as packaged snacks, can help people feel fuller and reduce cravings. This can lead to better portion control and healthier food choices.
According to Dr. Kovil, cutting out added sugars can help reduce daily calorie intake by 200 to 500 calories. This can lead to a weight loss of about half a kilogram to one kilogram per week, depending on the individual. However, he stressed that this step works best as part of a broader approach that includes healthy eating, exercise, good sleep, and stress management. Simply avoiding sugar without addressing other lifestyle habits may bring only limited or short-term results.
Physician Dr. Aarti Ullal of Gleneagles Hospital Parel said that simplifying the diet by using less oil, salt, and spices can aid digestion and reduce water retention and bloating. She recommended choosing whole, fresh foods such as fruits, vegetables, and home-cooked meals. Dr. Ullal added that combining such a diet with regular physical activity and proper hydration supports fat loss, boosts metabolism, and helps with long-term weight management without extreme diets or added stress.
