FDA Reveals 28 Sodas Juices and Drinks Recalled for Harmful Chemicals

by Daisy

The FDA has recalled 28 beverages so far in 2024, according to a report by The Daily Mail. Most of these drinks were pulled from the market because they contained drugs, bacteria, or harmful chemicals that were not disclosed by the manufacturers.

Among the recalled products is a pain-relieving tea called Himalayan Pain Relief Tea. It failed to list an anti-inflammatory medication on its label. Martinelli’s Apple Juice was also recalled after tests found arsenic, a toxic metal linked to increased risks of bladder and skin cancer.

Approximately 1.9 million bottles of Fiji Water, produced by Natural Waters of Viti Limited, were recalled after authorities discovered three types of bacteria in the water. The water also contained manganese at levels considered dangerous, as high manganese intake can lead to brain damage.

Charles Boggini Company had four products recalled recently: Pink Lemonade, Yellow Lemonade, Yellow Lemonade X, and Cola Flavoring Base. These beverages contained food dyes Red40 and Yellow 5, which were not declared on the labels. These dyes include benzidine, a chemical known to cause cancer in humans and animals. Additionally, the Cola Flavoring Base contained undeclared sulfites, preservatives that can trigger allergic skin reactions, digestive problems, and asthma in sensitive individuals.

Dr. Detwiler, a former FDA and USDA advisor and food safety expert from Northeastern University, told The Daily Mail that drinks often reach the market before they undergo thorough safety checks. He noted that many recent recalls focus on incorrect labeling and undisclosed ingredients. The FDA is under increasing pressure to enforce stricter regulations on food and beverage companies to protect consumers.

Other notable products recalled this year include Schweppes Zero Sugar Gingerale, PepsiCo’s Mug Root Beer, The Wiedemann Company’s Tapee Tea, Rise Brewing Organic Oat Milk (both original and vanilla), and various infant formulas such as Enfamil Nutramigen Hypoallergenic Infant Formula Powder and Crecelac Powdered Goat Milk Infant Formula.

This wave of recalls highlights ongoing concerns about the safety and transparency of ingredients in beverages sold to the public. Authorities continue to monitor products closely to prevent further risks to consumer health.
