Weight Loss Drugs Cannot Replace Group Support Experts Say

by Daisy

Slimming World consultants Lynne Kirwan and Ursula Flynn, based in Ardee and Dundalk, emphasize the growing need for slimming clubs, even as weight loss medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro rise in popularity.

Although these medications have made a significant impact on the weight loss industry, both consultants, who run groups in Ardee, Blackrock, and Dundalk, argue that lifestyle-based weight loss programs like Slimming World offer long-term benefits that cannot be replaced by medications.

Lynne and Ursula acknowledge the appeal of quick-fix solutions, especially for those struggling with their weight. However, they stress that lasting weight loss involves more than just a temporary solution. “There’s no magic bullet,” they said. “Losing weight and maintaining it requires permanent changes.”

Research backs up this view. A University of Oxford study found that individuals who stop using weight loss drugs typically regain the weight within a year, with full weight regain expected within two years unless they continue adopting a healthy lifestyle.

Slimming World’s approach focuses on making sustainable changes. “Our healthy eating plan encourages members to eat nutritious, everyday food to lose weight without feeling deprived,” Lynne explained. The program also includes an activity component, where members can increase their physical activity at their own pace. Additionally, Slimming World offers support for behavior change, helping individuals rethink their relationship with food and exercise.

“With over 55 years of experience, we offer a comprehensive support system that helps people develop lifelong healthy habits,” Lynne said. “We’re committed to supporting all our members, including those using weight loss medication alongside Slimming World.”

Ursula added that many of their members join after unsuccessful attempts to lose weight on their own. “People realize they need support because weight loss isn’t easy, especially when you’re doing it alone,” she said. “Group support is essential for lasting change.”

The power of community within Slimming World is also a key motivator. “Members form strong friendships and support each other. The accountability and motivation from a group make all the difference,” Ursula said.

Despite the growing availability of weight loss drugs, a recent poll of 2,000 adults revealed that 69% would still be unlikely to take them. Many cited concerns about lifestyle changes, with 25% saying they didn’t want to change their eating and social habits, and 21% worrying about inadequate nutrition.

Lynne added that new members often express surprise at how they can lose weight without feeling deprived. A recent survey of Slimming World members showed that 85% were amazed they could lose weight while still enjoying foods they love. The survey also revealed that 89% of members felt they could lose weight while still getting the nutrients they need. Furthermore, 77% reported making healthy meals for their families, and 76% were proud to pass on these healthy habits.
