England’s top doctor has said that weight loss injections could prove as transformative as statins in tackling a major public health crisis. Speaking at the NHS ConfedExpo conference in Manchester, Professor Sir Stephen Powis, NHS national medical director, said the health service would go “further, faster” in making these drugs available to patients. Currently, around 1.5 million people in England are estimated to be using weight loss medications, whether through the NHS or private prescriptions.
Sir Stephen highlighted that many of these medications will come off patent in the coming years, which is expected to significantly lower costs and improve access. He described this as a potential game-changer, stating that it could “completely transform access to these innovative treatments” for people struggling with obesity.
Obesity is one of the most pressing health challenges facing the UK, with about 29% of adults classified as obese. Sir Stephen said obesity brings enormous physical and psychological burdens and contributes to rising rates of related conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. He warned that without radical intervention, these trends would continue, placing increasing strain on health services and the wider economy.
The financial cost of obesity to the NHS is estimated at £11.4 billion annually, a figure described as unsustainable. Sir Stephen said that widespread use of weight loss jabs could help “turn the tide” on obesity and its associated health impacts. He compared the potential of these drugs to that of statins, which have dramatically reduced deaths from heart disease since their introduction.
However, he cautioned that weight loss medications are “no silver bullet” and stressed the need for more research into their long-term effects. While optimism surrounds their potential, health leaders say they must be used alongside other measures such as diet, exercise, and public health initiatives to address the complex issue of obesity effectively.
