AUSTIN, TX — The Whole Foods Market Foundation has awarded nearly \$200,000 to 10 community-led nonprofits in Newark, New Jersey, through its Newark Fresh, Healthy Food Access Grant program. Each organization received up to \$20,000 to support long-term access to fresh and healthy food across the city.
Since launching the grant in 2017, the Foundation has distributed over \$1.4 million to local groups working to improve food access in all five wards of Newark. These organizations have introduced innovative projects such as community gardens, urban farms, farmers’ markets, cooking classes, and agricultural skills programs.
With this year marking the final formal funding cycle in Newark, the Foundation is helping partners transition with initiatives like Leadership and Business Development Training. This program offers personalized mentoring in grant writing, bookkeeping, and business development to support sustainable growth.
Dianna Purcell, Director of Programs at Whole Foods Market Foundation, praised the collaborative spirit of Newark’s leaders, saying it has helped expand food access more quickly and effectively.
This year’s grants total \$197,199 and will fund projects selected with guidance from the Newark Community Advisory Council. The council’s local expertise ensures funds go to initiatives that best serve Newark residents by improving fresh food availability and nutrition education.
The Foundation remains committed to supporting Newark’s efforts to build a stronger, healthier food system through community-driven solutions.
