Rapper Fat Joe, known for his larger physique that inspired his stage name, has transformed his body by losing 250 pounds over the past decade. His weight loss journey includes eating smarter, cutting carbs, doing cardio, and using the medication Ozempic.
Joseph Antonio Cartagena, known as Fat Joe, gained fame with hits like “All The Way Up” and “Lean Back.” Over the last several years, he has slimmed down significantly and recently shared details about his transformation in interviews.
Fat Joe appeared on the Today Show’s 3rd Hour and updated fans on his progress, calling himself “not so fat Joe.” He revealed that his motivation began years ago after losing a close friend and collaborator, Big Pun, who died from a heart attack at 28. At Big Pun’s funeral in 2000, Fat Joe realized he needed to get healthier to support his own daughter.
In an interview with US Weekly, the 54-year-old said two key parts of his weight loss were cardio exercise and cutting back on carbs. “We try to eat everything with the least carbs possible,” he explained. He avoids bread, pasta, and rice, aiming to eat smarter without completely eliminating carbs.
Fat Joe also credits the medication Ozempic for helping control his appetite and reduce cravings. At his heaviest, he weighed around 470 pounds. Since starting Ozempic, he has found it easier to manage portions. “This morning, I ate toast,” he said. “I cut the corner off and kept it moving. Normally, I would’ve eaten the whole thing.”
While Ozempic has sparked controversy because some celebrities use it without a diabetes diagnosis, for Fat Joe it has supported his steady weight loss and helped improve his health.
Now healthier and happier with a slimmer waistline, Fat Joe is preparing to release new music and embrace a new chapter in life.
