Walk Your Way to Fitness as Diabetes UK Challenge Hits Southampton

by Daisy

Residents of Southampton are being encouraged to take part in Diabetes UK’s One Million Step Challenge this summer. Running from July 1 to September 30, the challenge invites participants to walk a total of one million steps over three months, which averages to 10,000 steps per day.

The initiative aims to improve fitness and mood, while also raising funds for vital diabetes research.

Television presenter and Diabetes UK ambassador Craig Rowe shared his experience, saying: “After discovering I had prediabetes, I’ve seen how staying active can improve my health. That’s why I’m taking on the One Million Step Challenge this year, to support the incredible work of Diabetes UK and keep myself moving. I encourage others to join me on this journey.”

Phaedra Perry, Diabetes UK’s head of South West and South Central, emphasized the impact of the challenge, stating: “The One Million Step Challenge is a fantastic way to stay active while making a real difference to the lives of those living with diabetes. Every step and every pound raised will help fund research for new treatments, push for better care, and provide vital support through our helpline.”

The challenge offers different levels, with beginners encouraged to take on the Half Million Step Challenge (around 5,400 steps per day). More experienced walkers can aim for the 1.7 million step challenge, equivalent to walking from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

Registration is now open with no minimum sponsorship requirement at step.diabetes.org.uk.

The One Million Step Challenge is supported by GLL, which operates over 250 Better centers across the UK. GLL’s Customer and Communities Director, Joseph Rham, expressed excitement about the partnership, saying, “We are thrilled to support Diabetes UK’s Million Step Challenge.”
