A popular doctor on TikTok has shared his thoughts on the reality of using Ozempic for weight loss, calling it a “miracle drug” for some people.
Dr. Karan Rajan, who has millions of followers, joined the ongoing conversation about Ozempic, which has gained attention after celebrities like Sharon Osbourne discussed their experiences with the drug. Osbourne revealed how it helped change her eating habits as she shed pounds. Former Nickelodeon star Josh Peck also made light of his own weight loss journey after using the drug, earning praise from fans.
Originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes, Ozempic is now more widely available for the general public. However, Dr. Rajan, a surgeon with expertise in weight loss procedures, took to TikTok to explain when people should consider using the drug and when it’s better to avoid it due to potential risks.
Dr. Rajan cautioned viewers that Ozempic isn’t a risk-free solution. “If you’re thinking about using Ozempic for short-term weight loss, let me tell you the truth,” he said. “Research shows most people who stop taking Ozempic regain most of the weight they lost.” He cited a study of nearly 2,000 adults, which found that patients who stopped using the drug regained two-thirds of the lost weight within a year.
The question, according to Dr. Rajan, is whether people should pursue weight loss at all costs, particularly if it involves lifelong medication. “The answer might be yes if the alternative is life-threatening metabolic diseases,” he said. For patients who truly need it, Ozempic can offer a safer alternative to weight loss surgery, which involves complex procedures to alter the digestive system.
However, Dr. Rajan emphasized that for individuals who are only slightly overweight or at a normal weight, using Ozempic for a few extra pounds or a “summer six-pack” may not be worth the risks. He warned that side effects, such as pancreatitis—an inflammation of the pancreas that can be fatal—could outweigh the benefits of short-term weight loss.
In the end, Dr. Rajan stressed that Ozempic should not be relied on alone for sustainable, long-term weight loss. It must be combined with lifestyle changes, including healthy eating and regular exercise.
For anyone considering Ozempic, Dr. Rajan suggests consulting experts to understand the potential risks and benefits.
