Ozempic, a drug widely recognized for its weight-loss potential, has gained attention despite there being other alternatives, such as Wegovy and Mounjaro. However, Ozempic is not officially approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for weight loss; it is only authorized for treating type 2 diabetes. The active ingredient in Ozempic, semaglutide, is approved for weight loss under a different name—Wegovy.
While Ozempic is celebrated for its effectiveness, it has also become associated with some undesirable side effects. One such effect is commonly referred to as “Ozempic face,” a term used to describe the hollowed appearance of the face that some people experience after taking the drug. Dr. Carolina Goncalves noted that this effect is rare, while Dr. Mary Branch explained that weight loss doesn’t allow individuals to target specific areas of their body.
Another side effect that has surfaced is “Ozempic mouth,” which refers to similar changes around the mouth area. Dr. Ed Robinson, speaking to The Sun, praised Ozempic’s effectiveness but warned about the aesthetic consequences of rapid weight loss. He explained that losing weight quickly can result in what some are calling “Ozempic face,” “Ozempic neck,” and “Ozempic mouth.”
Ozempic mouth occurs when fat is lost from the lower face, leading to skin laxity and the deepening of nasolabial folds (commonly known as laughter lines) and marionette lines, which run vertically from the corners of the mouth to the chin. As a result, the corners of the mouth may appear downturned, giving a tired or prematurely aged look.
Dr. Robinson pointed out that the change can be particularly noticeable in individuals who have experienced significant weight loss, as their skin struggles to keep up with the shifting facial structure. While the term “Ozempic mouth” suggests a change around the mouth, the effect often extends to sunken cheeks, saggy jowls, and more pronounced facial lines, contributing to an overall older appearance.
Despite these side effects, the health benefits of weight loss often outweigh the cosmetic changes. However, Ozempic is not for everyone. Some users, including well-known figures, have reported adverse effects such as being bedridden or experiencing minimal results.
