The rising popularity of weight loss drugs like Ozempic has brought attention not only to their intended effects but also to unexpected side effects reported by some users. Originally developed to treat Type 2 diabetes, Ozempic and similar GLP-1 injections have been widely adopted for weight loss. However, some men have reported a surprising change in their genital appearance, a phenomenon informally dubbed “Ozempic penis.”
While many users have experienced common side effects such as nausea and sickness—actor Jeremy Clarkson, for example, switched to an alternative medication called Mounjaro due to these issues—others claim the drug has caused a noticeable improvement in the size of their penis. These reports have circulated widely on social media platforms and online forums, with several men sharing positive experiences.
Ozempic works by suppressing appetite and lowering blood sugar levels, helping users feel full with less food, which can lead to rapid weight loss. Although the manufacturer Novo Nordisk and medical professionals emphasize that Ozempic should only be used under doctor supervision for diabetes treatment, celebrity endorsements and social media influencers have encouraged off-label use for weight management.
The reported genital changes, however, are not the result of actual tissue growth. According to urologist Dr. Martina Ambardjieva, the effect is an optical illusion caused by fat loss around the pubic area. As men lose weight rapidly with GLP-1 drugs, the fat pad covering the base of the penis shrinks, revealing more of the shaft and making the organ appear longer. “It’s not growth, it’s exposure,” Dr. Ambardjieva explained.
This perceived enlargement contrasts with the experiences of some women using the drug, who have not reported similar benefits. While the effect may seem positive compared to other unpleasant side effects, experts caution that this change is simply a byproduct of weight loss rather than a direct impact of the medication on penile tissue.
As the use of drugs like Ozempic continues to grow for weight loss, medical professionals urge users to be cautious and seek proper medical advice. The drug’s known side effects and health risks should be carefully considered before use, especially when obtained through unofficial channels encouraged by online influencers.
