The Planet Fitness gym in Norwood, Massachusetts, unexpectedly closed its doors on Thursday, leaving many members surprised and unable to work out. A sign posted on the gym’s entrance initially mentioned a health concern but was later changed to say the closure was due to damage repairs. The gym did not provide any information on when it might reopen.
Norwood’s health director confirmed that the town was not involved in the closure. She suggested that Planet Fitness might have used unclear language about a health issue, but likely intended only to announce a temporary maintenance closure.
Several gym members expressed frustration over the sudden closure and lack of prior notice. “They said they were doing some kind of repairs or something,” said member Eliza Swan. “I was here yesterday and didn’t see anything.” Later, Eliza found it strange that the sign had changed last minute.
Another member, Owen, added, “I feel like they should have given a notice. That would have been really nice.” Despite the closure, workers were seen inside the gym throughout the day. Many members showed up unexpectedly, without any email or official warning about the shutdown.
Gym member Marc Maynard said, “Usually, there is someone out here telling us what the problem is if it can’t be opened. Sometimes the fire alarm goes off.” Another member, Mark Ryan, noted, “A water fountain was down last week and they repaired it. The men’s locker room looked great, so I’m not sure what’s going on.”
Planet Fitness issued a statement to NewsCenter 5, emphasizing member and employee safety as a priority. The statement said the local franchise closed the Norwood location “out of an abundance of caution” to inspect an area of the club.
Member Hallie Dubuisson recalled, “I was here Tuesday. They did mention they were getting some new supplies.”
When asked about the reopening timeline, a worker leaving the gym only said, “When the work is done,” without offering further details.
Planet Fitness later encouraged members to use nearby locations while repairs continue. The company said the Norwood club “is working to reopen to the community as soon as possible.”
