Ryan Grewell, 36, has shared the remarkable story of his weight loss journey, having shed 124 kilograms (275 pounds) from a starting weight of nearly 222 kilograms. He credits his success to a mix of cycling, careful calorie tracking, and focusing on protein in his diet.
Ryan told Newsweek that his previous lifestyle was mostly sedentary, combined with poor eating habits that included fast food for most meals and consuming up to 5,000 calories a day. His health took a turn for the worse when his chiropractor warned him to lose weight because of worsening joint problems. At that time, he weighed around 475 pounds and realized he needed to make a change. After gaining an additional 12 pounds, he finally decided to take action.
At first, Ryan tried walking to lose weight, but his knees could not handle the strain. This led him to buy a bike, initially to reduce pressure on his joints. Cycling soon became a passion, reminding him of his childhood. Despite early challenges, including breaking two bikes that were not built for his size, he persevered. Eventually, he purchased a sturdier bike that allowed him to ride longer distances, sometimes covering more than 100 miles in a single ride.
Ryan said cycling helped him burn fat, build muscle, and improve his mental health. He described it as the greatest positive change for both his physical and mental well-being. Beyond fitness, Ryan’s transformation brought personal growth. He said the discipline and clarity gained through this journey have made him a better husband, father, and leader. He believes the experience has improved his presence and relationships with family and others.
This story highlights the impact of lifestyle changes on both body and mind, showing how dedication and patience can lead to life-changing results.
