Viral ‘Fish and Rice Cake’ Guy Finds Love on Reality Show, Becomes ‘Gym Lad’

by Daisy

Danny Andrews, 35, gained viral fame years ago after appearing in the 2007 documentary Baby Faced Body Builders, where he discussed his unusual fitness routine.

In the widely-shared clip, Andrews described his strict bodybuilding diet, consisting only of two ingredients: “fish and a rice cake,” which he ate six times a day. When asked what he ate during the day, he explained, “Just me fish for me 12 o’clock meal, which I’ll have with a rice cake.”

Since then, Andrews has made several appearances on TV dating shows, including First Dates, Celebs Go Dating, and Love Triangle. He revealed that his main motivation for joining Love Triangle eight months ago was to promote his rice cake business and have fun. However, during his time on the show, he unexpectedly met Sadie Bass, a 29-year-old social media manager from Bristol, and has since fallen deeply in love.

“I went on Love Triangle to have a holiday, have fun, and promote the rice cakes,” Andrews shared. “I never thought I would meet the love of my life there, but Sadie is absolutely my soulmate, and I’m so happy that embracing the meme led us to each other.”

The couple has been together for the last eight months but could not go public until last month due to a non-disclosure agreement with the show. Things are progressing well, with Bass even planning to move in with Andrews. “She’s moving from Bristol to my four-bed house here in Preston, and we’re going on our first holiday to Tenerife in two weeks. I can’t wait,” he added.

Bass revealed that she was already familiar with Andrews’ viral video before meeting him. “I knew about the video because my cousin would watch the meme. He showed it to me, and my friends and I used to quote it all the time,” she said. “When I met Danny, I didn’t realize he was the ‘fish and rice cake guy’ until some fans asked for pictures.”

Bass laughed, adding, “I thought he was some big celebrity! When he told me he was the ‘fish and rice cake man,’ I thought it was hilarious. I’m dating a legend—he’s British meme royalty.”

Despite the fame, Andrews expressed gratitude for the viral clip, especially since it helped him connect with Bass. “I wouldn’t normally be her type as she’s into poetry and is more introverted than me. Gym lads often have a bad stereotype, and people are surprised when they meet me in person,” he admitted.

This comes at a time when gym culture is becoming increasingly popular among Gen Z. According to research by Intuit Credit Karma, nearly 30% of 18 to 24-year-olds consider gym membership an “essential” expense. A March survey by OnePoll found that 27% of young adults in the UK view it as a necessary bill.

Alfonso Carballo, Head of the Department of People and Organisations at NEOMA Business School, explained, “Unlike previous generations, who focused on long-term goals like homeownership or retirement, Gen Z values immediate quality of life, experiences, and self-care.” For some in this generation, going to the gym is no longer about aesthetics, but about overall well-being.
