The city of Avon has launched a new exercise program offering Daytime Yoga classes, starting April 21.
The classes, led by Avon resident Heather Gillespie, complement the city’s existing evening yoga sessions.
Gillespie, who began her own yoga practice eight years ago, was drawn to the workout for both its physical and mental benefits. She said, “I was looking for something to strengthen and tone, but yoga brought much more, especially the breathing aspect, which I fell in love with.”
For the past three years, Gillespie has taught yoga through the Avon Recreation Department and at other studios under the name Positive Vibez Yoga. Her classes offer a range of styles, from Gentle Yoga to Yoga Plus, catering to various skill levels and intensities.
Gillespie emphasized that yoga is for everyone and encourages a welcoming, judgment-free environment. “People often say, ‘I’m not flexible, I can’t do yoga,’ but flexibility comes with consistency. Anyone, regardless of fitness level, can practice yoga.”
The classes are designed for adults and seniors and focus on promoting long-term wellness. Gillespie explained that yoga has numerous benefits, including improved blood pressure and a calming effect on the body. “I believe in the motto, ‘motion is the lotion,’” she said. “Keeping your body moving lubricates your joints.”
She also highlighted the social connections fostered through yoga. “Human connection is crucial, especially as we age,” she said. “It makes a huge difference in people’s lives.”
The Daytime Yoga classes will continue through the summer at Avon Isle Park, located at 37080 Detroit Road.
