Weight loss injections like semaglutide (Ozempic and Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro) have become some of the most talked-about health trends in recent years. However, their rapid rise has raised concerns among medical professionals and patients alike.
Dr. Jack Mosley, a GP registrar, shared insights into the growing use of these medications, citing his late father, Dr. Michael Mosley, a well-known BBC presenter. Dr. Mosley explained that his father recognized the groundbreaking potential of these drugs, but also had reservations due to the history of unproven treatments and the rise of unregulated online pharmacies.
“His concern was about how these drugs were being managed and the ‘wild west’ of online pharmacies,” said the 29-year-old doctor. “While they offer a significant breakthrough, there’s also caution around how they’re being handled.”
Dr. Mosley pointed out a key issue: these medications were originally designed for individuals with a BMI over 30 or for women with a BMI over 27 who have an obesity-related disease. “These drugs were never intended for people looking for a quick fix to shed a few kilos,” he noted.
Another worry is the increasing use of higher doses, which can lead to severe side effects. Mosley emphasized that many online pharmacies push these higher doses, as it increases their profits. “The incentive is clear — the higher the dose, the more money they make,” he said.
In response to these issues, Dr. Mosley has released his first book, Food Noise, which explores healthy living alongside these weight loss treatments. He explained that his book was inspired by his father, whose mission was to empower people to make healthier choices. “My dad was a huge influence on me, and I’ve tried to continue his legacy by helping people make lasting changes to improve their health,” he said.
As the popularity of these weight loss injections continues to rise, experts urge caution, stressing the importance of proper medical guidance and responsible use.
